Darkelf.org Publishing Guidelines
1. Respecting intellectual property -- Darkelf.org cannot and will not accept submissions that infringe the intellectual property rights of others. Be new and inventive, don't copy the work of others word-for-word and don't base your writings on the expressions of others. We think that TSR and Wizards of the Coast have done some excellent work with the drow. Their expressions belong to them and do not belong here. Work submitted to darkelf.org should not be based off of the characters or settings of their novels, game products or other works. In some instances, creating fanfiction may be considered fair use of another entity's copyright. Nonetheless, fanfiction is not accepted on Darkelf.org.
This may *seem* restrictive, but it's not: Your ability to create your own darkelven worlds and characters is limited only by your imagination and the requirement that you not borrow from the work of others. We do not have the resources to monitor infringement in works that we receive. By submitting your work to us for publication, you certify that your works are your own.
[For an interesting discussion about the legal issues surrounding the drow, see The Curious Origins of the Drow, and the larger discussion of TSR's mid-1990s copyright policies.]
2. The Open Publication License -- Part of our goal at Darkelf.org is to create a collaborative universe centered around the darkelves. We hope to accomplish this by encouraging authors to submit their work under Open Publication License (OPL). Under the OPL, you keep the copyright in your work but allow others to copy it, distribute it and make derivative works from it. The OPL requires that attribution (your name and contact info) must be included prominently with the work along with a copy of the license.
With the latest version of the OPL (currently in draft form) you can employ two options: The first it to prohibit users from making substantial modifications to your work. The second option allows you to prevent future users from selling print version of your work. One or both of the options can be chosen or both can be ignored. For complete information about the OPL, visit OpenContent.org.
The choice of using the OPL is up to each individual author, but its use is highly encouraged. We want to create a platform from which others can create even more tales of the drow and we think the OPL is the way to go. If you are considering submitting your work to us, we'd be happy to answer your questions about the OPL.
3. Tales of the Drow -- Stories, poetry and other works submitted to Darkelf.org should, of course, be about the darkelves. The don't all have to be set in the Underworld, but they should be centered around the drow and drow characters. Be new and inventive. Be imaginative. Tell the tales of the drow.
